I got off work early, so I headed to the beach with an old friend on a whim. We sat side by side in the sand and watched the sun slowly sink into the sea until it was gone. The sky turned from orange to pink to purple, and neither of us said a word. A little sailboat drifted by far away, and a seagull cried out. My friend put an arm around my shoulder, so the sea breeze didn't feel cold at all. Next time, I'll remember to bring a picnic blanket too.
It rained all day. Bori sat on the windowsill from morning on, just watching the raindrops. I sat next to Bori with a cup of hot cocoa and looked outside too. Every time a drop slid down the glass, Bori's tail swished. It was cold and gray outside, but our room was warm. I like days like this.
This afternoon I sat at the window seat in my usual cafe. I ordered a warm latte and opened a novel I'd been putting off. Outside, the trees swayed in the wind, and the glow of the lights settled on the pages. I meant to read just a few pages, but I kept going until my coffee went cold. I didn't do anything today, but it felt strangely full.
Today was my birthday. Mom brought home a two-tier cake piled high with strawberries. I blew up three balloons, and my cheeks were tingling afterward. I sprinkled confetti on the table and set out party hats. What I wished for before blowing out the candles is a secret. Inside the purple gift box were the colored pencils I'd been wanting!
